Then there was a wild chorus of war cries and hooves thundering against metal. A dozen centaurs charged out of the main stairwell.

“Ponies!” Tyson cried with delight.

My mind had trouble processing everything I saw. Chiron was among the crowd, but his relatives were almost nothing like him. There were centaurs with black Arabian stallion bodies, others with gold palomino coats, others with orange-and-white spots like paint horses. Some wore brightly colored T-shirts with Day-Glo letters that said PARTY PONIES: SOUTH FLORIDA CHAPTER.

Some were armed with bows, some with baseball bats, some with paintball guns. One had his face painted like a Comanche warrior and was waving a large orange Styrofoam hand making a big Number I. Another was bare-chested and painted entirely green. A third had googly-eye glasses with the eyeballs bouncing around on Slinky coils, and one of those baseball caps with soda-can-and-straw attachments on either side.

They exploded onto the deck with such ferocity and color that for a moment even Luke was stunned. I couldn’t tell whether they had come to celebrate or attack.

Alexandra Daddario talked to MTV about the changes in her character, Annabeth Chase, between the first and second films.

“I think in the first movie she’s tougher and she has more of a guard up. And I think as far as her relationship with Percy is concerned, she wants him to prove himself to her more,” Daddario said. “In this one, I think she’s a better friend. I think she’s let him in. She’s more vulnerable, and I think it’s sort of a sign of her growing up that she’s able to sort of show her weaknesses a little more. And I liked playing that.”

“You see more of what makes her tick, and when you find out Percy has a half-brother, she really doesn’t like him because he’s a Cyclops,” Daddario explained. “Not to give too much away, but I’m sure everyone’s read the books. And you sort of find out why that is, and you sort of find out where she comes from and who she was, and I think she learns a lot from her dislike of this person. She sort of finds out that everyone’s not so bad. It was interesting to play this more vulnerable, sweet side of her and see what makes her who she is.”
